Renewable Fuels Emerge as a Scalable Complement to Electric Mobility

As governments and industries accelerate efforts to decarbonise transport, electrification continues to dominate public policy and investment strategies. While electric vehicles play a growing role in urban mobility, industry leaders increasingly point to renewable and synthetic fuels as a necessary complement to achieve emissions reductions at scale and within realistic timelines.
According to industry data, more than 1.4 billion combustion engine vehicles are currently in operation worldwide, a fleet expected to remain active for decades. Replacing this existing stock entirely with electric vehicles presents significant economic, infrastructural and social challenges, particularly in regions with limited grid capacity or charging infrastructure.
Renewable fuels produced from green hydrogen and captured CO₂ offer an alternative pathway by enabling emissions reductions using existing vehicles, fuel distribution networks and industrial infrastructure. This approach allows for immediate deployment without requiring large scale changes to transport systems or consumer behaviour.
Heavy transport remains a key challenge for electrification. Electric solutions for long haul trucking, agriculture and construction continue to face constraints related to battery weight, charging time and operational range. Renewable fuels provide a viable option for these sectors by decarbonising current fleets while next generation technologies mature.
Lifecycle considerations are also shaping the debate. Battery production depends on critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt and nickel, processes that are energy intensive and geographically concentrated. As a result, both Europe and the United States face growing exposure to supply chains dominated by China, raising concerns about long term industrial and strategic dependency.

As energy transition strategies evolve, policymakers and industry stakeholders are increasingly recognising the need for technology neutral approaches that prioritise measurable emissions reductions. Renewable fuels are positioned to play a critical role alongside electric mobility, particularly in sectors where electrification alone remains impractical.
